ABOUT THE VTC

Imbaseni VTC is a flourishing concern. All the students are very eager to learn, as it gives them an opportunity to gain skills in a range of subjects and increases their chance to gain employment or, more likely, become self-employed. The ten instructors there teach 149 students a range of subjects including building, tailoring, carpentry, vehicle mechanics and electrical installation.

The students themselves, and their families and friends often have to save hard in order to pay the fees. Over 40 students are residents and stay in the two large dormitories on site. Among them each year are those who have no families or could not normally afford the fees and whose fees are paid by sponsors. Six of the current intake of students used to live on city streets, but are now living in a caring community, eager to learn all they can to acquire practical skills and qualifications.

The vision for the VTC came 15 years ago from far-sighted Scripture Union staff who sensed the need for a facility to make a real difference to the community. Their deep Christian faith and perseverance in the face of severe economic hardship, has resulted in a centre which is making a real impact for good. One of the most encouraging experiences is meeting former students who have gone on to become self-employed, who look back on their days at Imbaseni VTC with a real sense of gratitude for the opportunity it gave them.
